Archaeologists extracting ancient lovers

More about the famous burial...

**Gina

By ARIEL DAVID, Associated Press Writer

ROME - Archaeologists working on the eve of Valentine's Day carefully began digging up the bones of a prehistoric couple on Tuesday, hoping to keep their 5,000-year-old embrace undisturbed forever.

The skeletons unearthed last week were being scooped out of the earth to undergo tests before going on display in the northern Italian city of Mantua, archaeologists said.

The pair, buried between 5,000 and 6,000 years ago in the late Neolithic period, are believed to be a man and a woman who died young, because their teeth were found intact. Archaeologists have hailed the find, saying that double burials from that period are rare and none have been found in such a touching pose.

"We will work to keep them together," said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who led the dig. "Removing the turf in one piece will preserve the position and allow us to collect more data on the burial."

The burial was unearthed on the outskirts of Mantua during construction work. The site is 25 miles south of Verona, the city where Shakespeare set the story of "Romeo and Juliet," and the discovery fueled musings in the media about prehistoric love.

Menotti also has said there is little doubt the couple's pose was born of a deep love, but warned it could be impossible to determine the exact nature of their relationship and how they died.

Mantua's archaeological office said in a statement Tuesday that, in some cases of the period, the wife would be sacrificed when her husband died and buried with him. However, the statement said that "at the current stage of research" there was no evidence that this was what happened to Mantua pair.

Alongside the couple, archaeologists found flint tools, including an arrowhead and a knife. Experts plan to analyze the tools along with the earth the couple was buried in to see if there are remains of flowers or plants that might have decorated the bodies, Menotti said.

They will also look at the skeletons to verify their sex and search for signs of illness or other possible causes of death, she said.

After undergoing lab tests, the couple are to be displayed at Mantua's Archaeological Museum.

The discovery was made in a region rich in Neolithic treasures, including some 30 burial sites, all single, as well as the remains of prosperous villages filled with artifacts made of flint, pottery and animal horns.

By a vote of 20-13, legislators in the Mexican state of Coahuila, which borders Texas, yesterday passed the most progressive same-sex union law in that country, one that goes further, according to Reuters, than one passed by lawmakers in Mexico City in November.

Said gay rights activist Silvia Solis: "It is more like a civil marriage." Among other benefits, the law "would grant social security benefits to both members of a homosexual union."

Coahuila, Mexico's third largest state with a population of 2.3 million, once formed a territory with Texas to its north, before Texas seceded to become the Republic of Texas (and then later part of the United States).

When Mexico City passed its same-sex union law in November, openly gay congressman David Sanchez said, "These reforms are going to cause a snowball effect that no one will be able to stop." Coahuila, which had its same-sex union bill in the works at the time, is the first state to follow suit.

My resolutions for 2007

1. Finish my dissertation >>> I'll probably defend it by March...or I'll be killed by my advisor by then.

2. Stop being a slacker >>> I need to finish once and for all my pending duties. Dissertation included but also my job and creative duties.

3. Move to a bigger city >>> I like this city but I feel it's small for me and also people here are a little conservative... well actually very conservative.

4. Improve my English and French >>> This one is simple. More movies, tv series and books in these languages.

5. Quit smoking >>> It's so difficult when all your friends smoke in front of you so maybe I should move to NYC where it's forbidden in public places!.

6. Stop counting calories and practice a sport >>> I'm the most unhealthy person in the world: I smoke, I drink, I don't excercise, I don't eat well, I drink a lot of Coffee and Coca-Light , I sleep at 3 am at the morning everyday and so on... So this year I promise to change at least a little bit.

7. Go to a MCR show >>> They need to visit Mexico or I will die here alone in my dark cave. Teenage mexican fans scare the shit out of me (!) but I guess I can stand some goth wannabes for two hours.

Note: Teenage mexican fans I love you because you love MCR (and Green Day in most of the cases) but for god's sake they won't marry you or have sex with you and if you write a fanfiction please check the spelling and grammar!. Misspellings are very annoying because you ruin such a beautiful language and denote you don't even read the newspaper.

8. Stop being bitchy with kids and teenagers! >>> This resolution includes being tolerant with my cousins, my students and MCR fans. After all they own the future. They just need to open their minds and change the world.

9. Write the stories that are in my head  >>> It's frustrating writing things I don't enjoy that much when I could be giving life to my fantasies. This is the year I'll definitely write more.

10. Remain honest with myself >>> As simple as that.
